EarthCARE, An Environmental Education Partnership ™

An EarthCARE Update From Brandon, a Grade 7 student at Terry Fox Elementary School in Orleans, Ontario

April 22, 2007

EarthCARE's Battery Drive is a big success. So far we have collected more than 2 000 batteries but it's not over yet. The Battery Drive will run until spring. So keep bringing in those batteries.

Here is a little info on what batteries do to the environment. Batteries are responsible for 70% of heavy metals found in landfills. This is a big problem since landfills are eating away at our Earth. So all we ask is that you give your used batteries to EarthCARE. We will then recycle them properly. We except 'AA', 'AAA', 'C', 'D', 6 volt, phone, and watch batteries.

Don't forget the classes with the most batteries in primary, junior, and intermediate divisions will win a prize package courtesy of EarthCARE.

Think Global, Act Local

At the end of the front hall there's a tree on a bulletin board that is displaying it's leaves. Well, these leaves have writing on them. They are ideas on how to save the earth, thought up by the students of Terry Fox. If you haven't posted a leaf on the tree yet, we encourage you to do so. When we are done, you can walk by and pick one leaf and then try to do that idea for that day. One of the themes for Think Global, Act Local is "Every Person Can Make a Difference". Try to do your part to save the earth.

Water Conservation

Water takes up 75% of the Earth's surface. Most of it is undrinkable, since 97% of it is salt water, and another 2% is trapped in glaciers. That means only 1% of water is drinkable. So water conservation is very important.

All you have to do are little things such as turning off the tap tightly when it is not being used. Every bit helps.

Tree Huggers

All the paper that you use comes from trees and that's a lot of trees! So imagine how many trees it takes for everybody in the world to use paper. If you think that you can live without paper, fine, suit yourself but try to live without oxygen. Trees give us most of the world's oxygen. So please don't waste paper. "Do what you can to help protect our Earth, remember it's one of a kind!"
