Trillium Elementary School: Composting - A Success Story!
Last spring, Trillium started a school composting program. The partnership among the students, staff and parents has been one of the keys to the success of the program. The School Council spent $500 to purchase green composters for each of the classrooms.
The Environmental Club (known as Small Ears) believes
if you are good to the Earth, it will be good to you. The
school identified 3 benefits of the program: reduction of waste,
the active participation of students in a school-wide initiative
and the humus produced by composting would improve the quality
of the soil in the school gardens.
Students from grade 5-6 classes are responsible for the pick-up from all of the classrooms and the cleaning of the composters when they are returned. Laura McAllister, Superintendent of Curriculum, was
able to see first hand the program in action on a visit to the school.
Trillium has taken on this initiative with enthusiasm and commitment. Congratulations to one and all.
