February 8, 2010 - 2009 OCDSB refuse/recycling data reports are now available online, (OCDSBrefuserecyclingdata09.xls).

February 8, 2010 - The students of Churchill Alternative have put together an excellent PowerPoint presentation (RecyclesChurchillAlt.ppt) that illustrates the recycling system at work in their school.

February 8, 2010 - With fun and fascinating demonstrations, Gloucester High School's EarthCARE team did their part in educating their fellow students during the holiday season.

February 8, 2010 - Dec 7-11/2009 was Waste Reduction Week at Sir Robert Borden High School. Among many successful activities, the most popular event of the week was the water bottle exchange where the BASE (Borden Active Students for the Environment) club gave away an EarthCARE canteen to any student that brought in four plastic water bottles.

January 18, 2010 - In 2008-2009, EarthCARE saved the Ottawa-Carleton and Hastings/Prince Edward boards over $2 million and reduced CO2 emissions by over 19 tonnes. Read the details in the OCDSB (pdf) and the HPEDSB (pdf) final reports.

January 18, 2010 - In an effort to reduce waste, while conserving energy and water, the members of Glebe Collegiate Institute's TWIGS team have decided to take action in eliminating the sale of bottled water from Glebe's vending machines.

November 27, 2009 - The 2008/2009 audit reports are in! Key results of the EarthCARE program in the OCDSB include over $1.8 million in savings from LOCO alone and an estimated 17 ton reduction in CO2 emissions; this is all thanks to a 92.5% participation rate! November 11, 2009 - Congratulations to Featherston Drive PS teacher, Maggie LeMay, 2009's Tri-Valley Conservation Awards Winner in the Public School category.

July 24, 2009 - As part of the 2009 OCDSB EarthCARE Expo, students were invited to create a 60-second podcast and enter it into a board-wide competition. Podcast topics included EarthCARE activities such as: litter-less lunches, use of plastic bags and water bottles, recycling, reducing energy and water use, using alternative transportation. Check out the winning entries and some of the crowd favourites!

June 23, 2009 - Growing Up Organic, a group that promotes organic food production in Canada, came to Pinecrest PS and built two vegetable gardens with the Grade 1 class. The students are all excited to harvest their organic vegetables next fall!

June 10, 2009 - Congratulations to this year's Chief Custodian Award winner, Bayview Public School's Geoff Raymond. Check out the nomination letter that the students in Bayview's EarthCARE/Environmental Club sent in on Geoff's behalf.

May 28, 2009 - In honour of Earth Day, students at Avalon Public School put together an outstanding video listing the ways in which we can all reduce our impact on the environment and help contribute to a green and sustainable future.

May 12, 2009 - Over 300 students and teachers from across the OCDSB attended the 6th annual EarthCARE Expo at Confederation Education Centre to celebrate their EarthCARE success and inspire more.

May 4, 2009 - Check out Grade 12 student, Ozlem's report about the success of a cake raffle he and his fellow students held at their school, Glebe Collegiate Institute. Proceeds from this event will match the grant they received from the School Greening Partnership Program.

March 9, 2009 - Leslie Park P.S.'s Kat G, Cassidy M, Ben H, William L, Saskia M, Carleigh H and EarthCARE leader Mme. Claudette have put together a terrific video presentation showcasing their school's efforts to recycle, conserve energy and reduce waste.

March 6, 2009 - Earth Hour in Canada - Turn off your lights on Saturday March 28, 2009 at 8:30 pm. Millions of Canadians will turn off their lights on March 28th for Earth Hour in support of action on climate change. Lots of information is available on their site, but be sure to check out the toolkits and downloadable materials page for tips to help you get started.

February 12, 2009 - Between November 5th and December 5, 2008 in partnership with Hydro Ottawa and EarthCARE, Glebe's TWIGS advertised, organized and ran a seasonal light exchange where they collected 36 strings of inefficient and excessive energy-consuming incandescent strings of lights. Terrific work TWIGS!

February 6, 2009 - TWIGS presents "Trash-Free Fridays". Every Friday beginning Friday Feb 6, Glebe Collegiate students are encouraged to bring litter-less lunches to reduce the amount of garbage output.

January 27, 2009 - Fundraising for their African twinned school and raising environmental awareness are the focus for Riverview Alternative School’s Environment Fair to be held on Earth Day, April 22 2009.

December 22, 2008 - Cedarview Middle School keep everyone up to date with their EarthCARE activities through a monthly newsletter; this month's edition features litterless lunches, tree planting and anti-idling reminders.

December 22, 2008 - Congratulations to Dunning Foubert Elementary School and Elizabeth Wyn Wood Alternate Program, EarhCARE's 2008 fall contest winners.

December 22, 2008 - Elementary and secondary EarthCARE team leaders from 132 schools in the OCDSB attended a training/in-service program on Oct 16-17 at Confederation Educational Centre. Participants in the sessions shared last year's results as well as ideas, challenges and goals for this year's EarthCARE program; thank you to all who attended.

December 21, 2008 - The Ottawa Go Green Expo will be held at Lansdowne Park March 21 & 22, 2009. Shop Green. Eat Green. Learn Green. Live Green. December 9, 2008 - From river clean-up to battery drives, it's a busy year for the FROGGs at Colonel By!

December 9, 2008 - With both an educational and a leadership component, the EarthCARE Garden, funded by the City of Ottawa's Green Partnership program, has been a wonderful opportunity for the children and the community to interact and learn from each other.

December 8, 2008 - In 2007-2008, EarthCARE saved the Ottawa-Carleton and Hastings/Prince Edward boards over $2.2 million and reduced CO2 emissions by over 20 tonnes. Read the details in the OCDSB (pdf) and the HPEDSB (pdf) final reports.

November 7, 2008 - Chalkfest at Queen Mary Public School, where students express their ideas and understanding of Reduce, Reuse and Recycle and the effect it has on the Earth.

July 1, 2008 - EarthCARE invited to present at the Ontario Society for Environmental Education Conference at Bark Lake, Ontario - a wonderful opportunity to introduce EarthCARE to educators from across the Ontario.

June 30, 2008 - Over thirty keen teachers attended the EarthCARE presentation at Ottawa University's Transition to Practice Conference: 'Environmental Education' on April 23, 2008.

June 15, 2008 - Hosted by CBC Radio's Adrian Harewood and with Lynn Scott, Chair of the OCDSB and Minister of the Environment, John Baird in attendance the 2008 EarthCARE EXPO was a huge success. Congratulations to the award winners and thank you to everyone who contributed to this memorable event.

June 15, 2008 - Thanks to Trillium's Team Leaders, Sylvie Chilibeck, Louise Henderson, Kathryn Hughes and Heather Mutrie; EARS (Environmental Action Student Representatives); and the school council environmental committee for putting on Trillium's very successful book exchange.

March 21 2008 - The annual Ottawa EarthCARE EXPO is on May 8, 2008, from 11:00am - 1:00pm at Confederation High School, 1645 Woodroffe Ave., Nepean, Ontario. March 21, 2008 - Simon Jackson, founder and chairman of Spirit Bear Youth Coalition - one of the world's largest youth-run environmental organizations to deliver the keynote address at the annual Ottawa EarthCARE EXPO to be held on May 8, 2008.

July 23 2007 - Based on the 2007 audits, the EarthCARE scoreboards for the OCDSB and the HPEDSB are now available. From a participatory and an economic perspective, the scoreboards illustrate the tremendous success that both boards have had with EarthCARE.

June 22 2007 - On May 3 2007, over 200 people attended the EarthCARE Expo including students, parents, staff, sponsors, members of the community and Minister of Environment, The Honourable John Baird. Thank you to all those who attended and helped to make the 2007 EarthCARE Expo such a tremendous success.

May 2 2007 - With their "Think Global, Act Local" tree and a very successful battery drive, students at Terry Fox ES are certainly heavily involved with EarthCARE.

May 2 2007 - By creating their robotic classmate, Megamo, the grade 5 students of Katimavik Elementary School learned that many items can be reused in a new form rather than being discarded.

May 2 2007 - Led by their teacher, Mme. Christina Organisto-Martin, the students of Greenbank Middle School's grade 7 French immersion class have taken on a number of environmentally conscious initiatives including making and selling recyclable cloth bags.

April 26 2007 - Earth Day Celebrations kicked off early Friday morning at R. Byrns Curry School with a "Walking School Bus" driven by Ottawa's new police chief, Vern White.

April 7 2007 - Janet Perry's science class at Frederick Banting Alternate Site, helping out Emily, the monarch butterfly and learning to become stewards in protecting the health of our planet.

March 17 2007 - "Walden: The Ballad of Thoreau" is a theatrical play about the last two days Henry David Thoreau spent in his cabin at Walden Pond. This two-act, one-set, four-character play is designed for use by high schools and colleges. March 9 2007 - Rockcliffe Park Public School's EarthCARE Team has taken on a mission - stop idling cars at their school!

February 18 2007 - Check out the latest addition to our Focus on Books section, a lesson plan based on Michael Martchenko's Ma, I'm a Farmer.

February 12 2007 - Parkwood Hills Public School hosted Terry Newcombe and Geoff MacKay from the Sierra Club to help staff and students learn to reduce, reuse and recycle their lunch time garbage.

February 12 2007 - Evergreen Workshop Series, February to May 2007 (PDF). Join us for a series of exciting greening workshops this spring. The workshops are open to all Ottawa schools and daycares that want to engage their students in the creation of healthy, stimulating outdoor spaces - right on their own school ground! Teachers, administrators, parents, custodians, students and community volunteers are all welcome.

All workshops run from 7–9pm and are held at the Ottawa Technical Learning Centre, 485 Donald Street—Library Resource Centre.

January 25 2007 - Students at Frederick Banting Alternate School in Stittsville recently held their 3rd annual Banting Bargain Barn for the Holiday Season. The Bargain Barn has been a way of recycling items that students and staff no longer use and, at the same time, helping those in need.

January 25 2007 - Carleton University student, Gabriel Wildgen discusses the importance of solid waste diversion and what various groups, including EarthCARE, are doing to help reduce the amount of solid waste that ends up in our land fills.

January 7 2007 - Students from 40 Ottawa-Carleton schools participate in Hydro Ottawa's innovative LED Exchange program. This yielded 48,000 kWh savings and prevented 13.4 kilograms of CO2 from entering the atmosphere.

January 2 2007 - McGregor Easson Public School in Ottawa, Ontario recognized as an official Green School.

January 2 2007 - OCDSB utility data for 2005 are now available on the EarthCARE Canada website.

October 3 2006 - Audit data shows that the OCDSB saved $1,247,147 in 05/06 with EarthCARE - view 05/06 audit results.

September 25 2006 - Recognizing outstanding conservation efforts at the OCDSB. Ameresco Canada and the OCDSB received a Certificate of Recognition for outstanding achievements in energy conservation at the Board's offices on September 12, thanks to its participation in the Better Schools Partnership®(BSP) program. The Board is saving over $5 million annually on energy costs through the BSP.

Community leaders, businesses and residents of Ottawa will be coming together to discuss the broader challenges of climate change and to introduce tangible solutions already available and easily implemented at the household level. EarthCARE students from Sir Wilfrid Laurier S.S. team up with the Raincoast Conservation Society to present Art for the Earth May 18 2005, 6:30pm - 8:45pm - EarthCARE students from Sir Wilfrid Laurier S.S. team up with the Raincoast Conservation Society to present Art for the Earth. There will be music, beverages and door prizes, as well as many fabulous artworks and crafts donated by local artists and art students from Sir Wilfrid Laurier S.S.

All proceeds will be donated to the Raincoast Conservation Society to help conserve the Great Bear Rainforest (one of the largest contiguous tracts of temperate rainforest left in the world) in British Columbia. The event will be taking place at Sir Wilfrid Laurier S.S. on 1515 Tenth Line Rd. Tickets are $2 and can be purchased at the door.
