As you already know, the Earth Care Fair will be held on Tuesday, April 20th at Sir Robert Borden. During the first two hours, from 4-6 pm, people will have the opportunity to circulate among many environmental displays. From 6-7, there will presentations, including one by David Suzuki.
In order to make the first portion of the evening a success, we need your participation. There will three opportunities for your students to become involved.
The first contest provides students with an opportunity to create a poster about water, waste or energy. The posters will be sorted into categories (K-3, 4-5, 6-8, 9-10, 11-12) and will be judged on the following criteria: - creativity - clear message - visually appealing In order for a poster to be considered valid it must be sent to Maggie Melenhorst by 4:15 pm on April 15th and it must have the artist's name, grade, school and topic clearly printed on the back.
The second contest involves the creation of a three dimensional globe that depicts how we both harm and heal the globe with our actions. The categories are K-5, 6-8, 9-10, 11-12, and the sculpture will be judged on: - creativity - clear message - the use of recycled material - effective depiction of how we both harm and heal the world If you wish to participate in this contest, you must reserve a space using the e-mail addresses listed at the bottom. You will be able to set up your globe sculpture from 1:00 to 3:15 pm on the day of the event.
The third and final contest is based on environmental innovation. This contest is comprised of a presentation using a poster board, powerpoint or a video. In your presentation demonstrate how your innovation has had a positive impact on the environment in your community. This may be an individual, group or school project. For example, at Merivale High School we bring our non-recyclable pop cans to the Ottawa Deaf Centre. By doing this, we are making a positive contribution to both our school and community. The presentation needs to be ready for judging by 3:45 pm on the day of the fair. If you are interested in participating in this contest, please let us know ASAP so that we may reserve floor or table space for you.
We are also looking to put together a power point presentation representing the Earth Care initiatives throughout the board. We are giving each school the opportunity to prepare three creative slides for this presentation. When your slides are prepared, e-mail them as an attachment to one of the addresses below.
The last hour of the fair will consist of presentations, including dramatic skits, David Suzuki awarding the contest winners, and a half hour talk by Dr. Suzuki.
