I had recently visited Clifford Bowey Public School. What an interesting visit! I had the pleasure of meeting the principal Valerie Maclean followed by a tour of the facility with Owen Watkins. Clifford Bowey is a segregated site catering to a clientele ranging in ages of 4 to 21 years of age. Students are developmentally delayed. Most of the students are non-verbal. To communicate many students use American sign language as well as PECS (Picture exchange communication system). I witnessed very interesting and well used resources including the swimming pool, which is shared with the city, touch screen computer programs as part of the interactive programing, and the "Snoezelen Room" which you've got to see to believe....Snoezelen means relaxation in Swedish. One interesting component of the programming,at Clifford Bowey P.S., is the use of the recycle program as a constant and daily program where students and teachers participate in environmental care through the recycling of material, paper and cans. It is a hands-on program. I thoroughly enjoyed my visit and do look forward to hearing more about the school's fitness trail initiative and its yard improvement. These projects will provide shade and a safe environment for students who are looking to enjoy the natural environment. Thanks for the visit Owen and Valerie!
